A standby generator keeps selected circuits on during an outage. It has to be connected with a transfer switch so it cannot send power back onto the utility lines.

Outages in Maury County are usually storms, not a reason to run a cord through a window. These are the situations people price.
Photo placeholderPhoto placeholder: a standby generator on a concrete pad beside a house, clear of windows.
No photo yet. The pad, the clearances, and the gas line are the picture, once a real install exists.
You already own a portable generator and a nest of extension cords
That setup is how people backfeed a panel with a suicide cord. Do not do it. A portable can be used outdoors, far from windows, with cords rated for the load. A transfer switch is the safe way to feed the house. Carbon monoxide from a generator in a garage kills people. Keep it outside.
Someone in the house depends on medical equipment, a sump, or a well
Those loads deserve a listed transfer method and a generator sized for them, not a hope that the portable starts.
You want the lights back without going outside in the storm
That is a standby unit on a pad, with an automatic transfer switch. It is a different budget from a portable.
The panel is already full or is a problem brand
A generator project often finds the panel issues on the panel page. Price them together so you do not buy a generator the service cannot accept.

What the job involves
This is the electrician's and the plumber's or gas fitter's work. The homeowner chooses what must stay on.
List the loads that matter
Refrigerator, furnace fan or heat pump, a few lights, a well, a sump, medical gear. A whole house unit is not required for that list. Angi separates portable, partial, and whole house sizes, and the prices are far apart. Say which outage you are actually trying to ride through.
Install a transfer switch
The switch is what keeps generator power off the utility lines. Angi figures about $1,200 of a typical install toward that wiring. Utility workers can be hurt by a backfeed. This is not optional equipment.
Set the unit and the fuel
A standby needs a pad, clearances from windows and from the property line, and a fuel path: natural gas, propane, or sometimes diesel. The gas piping is often a second trade. Ask who pulls that permit.
Tell the utility
Columbia Power and Water, Duck River Electric, Middle Tennessee Electric, or Mount Pleasant Power, depending on the bill, may have an interconnection or a meter requirement. Do not assume a neighbor's utility is yours. Spring Hill in particular can go either way at the county line.

What published prices say
Angi's 2026 generator guide puts the average reported installation near $5,157, with most projects between $1,512 and $8,803. Read the next sentence of that guide before you budget: it also lists whole house generators, roughly 22 to 48 kW, at $5,000 to $18,000, and it says the low numbers include smaller equipment. A concrete pad, a transfer switch, permits of about $50 to $200, and gas piping sit on top of the machine.
A Columbia quote that matches the $1,512 end is probably not a whole house standby. Ask what the number includes.
Portable with an inlet and a manual switch, versus a permanent standby.
Which circuits are on the switch.
Gas service already at the house, or a new propane tank.
A panel upgrade discovered during the visit.
Where the pad can sit without violating window clearances.

Angi, whole house generator cost, 2026. Reports an average installation near $5,157, with most projects from $1,512 to $8,803. The same guide lists whole house units in the 22 to 48 kW class at $5,000 to $18,000, standby installation labor and setup averaging about $4,520, a transfer switch near $1,200, and permits around $50 to $200. The low end includes smaller equipment. It is not a quote for a whole house standby in Columbia.
Angi, cost to upgrade an electrical panel. Puts a panel upgrade at $1,200 to $2,000. Also lists a breaker replacement at $100 to $250, a subpanel at $400 to $1,750, and a meter box at $200 to $800.
Columbia Power and Water Systems, electric service. CPWS says it serves customers in Columbia and Spring Hill and other areas in Maury County. Power comes from TVA. The page also links their electrical service requirements.
Duck River Electric, service territory. Duck River Electric describes a territory that includes Maury County outside the city systems. Read the bill. The name on it is the utility that has to approve a meter pull.
Middle Tennessee Electric fact sheet. MTE says it primarily serves Cannon, Rutherford, Williamson, and Wilson counties, and also parts of Maury County. That matters on the Williamson side of Spring Hill.
Tennessee electrical permits. The State Fire Marshal section explains electrical permits and inspections, including the CORE system, and gives 615 741 7170 for people who do not use the online system.

Storms, utilities, and where the pad can go
Photo placeholderPhoto placeholder: side yard of a Maury County house large enough for a generator pad.
No photo yet. Clearance from windows matters more than the brand of the unit.
Ice and wind take lines down across Maury County a few times a year. A generator is a comfort and a freezer saver. It is not a promise that someone will start it for you at midnight. Automatic standby equipment starts itself. A portable does not. We do not offer an emergency dispatch and we do not claim anyone answers at all hours.
Columbia Power and Water serves Columbia, Spring Hill, and other parts of Maury County, and it buys power from TVA. Duck River Electric covers a wide rural territory that includes Maury. Middle Tennessee Electric covers parts of Maury and much of Williamson County. Mount Pleasant has a municipal system. The electrician needs the name on your bill before they schedule anything that opens the service.
Older in town lots in Columbia may not have a side yard that fits a generator, a propane tank, and the required distance from a bedroom window. That is a site problem, not a catalog problem. A newer Spring Hill lot usually has more room and a tighter setback from the neighbor. Say which one you have.

Questions
Can I backfeed the dryer outlet?
No. That can energize the utility line and kill someone working on it. Use a transfer switch. If the power is already out and you have a portable, keep it outdoors and use outdoor rated cords to the appliances, not a homemade panel cord.
Natural gas or propane?
Natural gas is simpler if the house already has it and the meter can supply the generator. Many county lots are propane. The gas company or the propane supplier has to be in the plan. We do not size the meter from here.
Does a generator need a permit in Maury County?
A permanent electrical connection does. Start with the state electrical permit page. The building permit for the pad may be the county or the city. Ask. We are not going to invent the fee.
Will it run the whole house?
Only if it was sized and wired for the whole house. Most sensible installs pick circuits. Air conditioning and electric heat are large loads. Put them in the conversation at the start.
