Electrical Panel Upgrade in Columbia, TN

A panel upgrade is how an older Columbia house gets enough service for a modern kitchen, a heat pump, or a car charger. It is not a breaker swap you do yourself.

Signs you need this

These are reasons to stop adding load and have an electrician look. If a breaker will not stay on, or you smell heat, turn the breaker off and call.

No photo yet. A real panel photo needs the owner's permission. This is not a generated picture.

The main breaker says 100, 60, or less

A 60 amp or 100 amp service was common when a house had a gas range and window units. It is a poor match for an electric range, a heat pump, and a charger on the same day.

Breakers trip when two large appliances run

That can be a weak breaker, a loose connection, or a service that is simply full. You cannot tell from the hallway. An electrician can.

The panel is Federal Pacific or Zinsco

Federal Pacific Stab Lok panels were the subject of a CPSC investigation that closed in 1983 after the commission saw breakers fail its tests. Zinsco era panels have a similar reputation among electricians for connections that overheat. The practical advice is to identify the brand before anyone adds a circuit, and to talk about replacement rather than filling empty slots.

There is no empty slot, and tandem breakers are already stacked

A full panel is a clue the last project borrowed space. A subpanel is sometimes the right addition. Sometimes the whole service has to grow. Those are different prices.

Lights dim when the air conditioner starts

Dimming can be a loose neutral, which is urgent, or a service that is too small. Turn off what you can and call. Do not open the dead front to wiggle wires.

What the job involves

What an electrician does. Your part is to describe the symptoms and stay out of the panel.

  1. Read the existing service

The electrician notes the main breaker size, the panel brand, how the circuits are used, and whether the meter and the mast look as old as the panel. A new 200 amp panel on a 100 amp service drop is not a finished upgrade.

  2. Do a load calculation

The calculation is what decides 200 amps versus a smaller fix. A charger nameplate alone does not prove you need a new service. Neither does a guess.

  3. Coordinate the utility shutoff

The meter has to be pulled by, or with, the utility. In Columbia and much of Spring Hill that is often Columbia Power and Water. It is not always. The name on the power bill is the company that has to agree. Middle Tennessee Electric serves parts of Maury and a lot of Williamson County, which includes some of Spring Hill. Duck River Electric serves rural parts of the county. Mount Pleasant has its own power system.

  4. Replace the panel, land the circuits, and close the wall

Power is off for the work. The electrician moves circuits, replaces breakers that the code requires, and bonds the grounding. If they open drywall, someone has to patch it. Ask if that is in the price.

  5. Permit and inspection

Tennessee electrical permits run through the State Fire Marshal's process, and Columbia Power and Water and Mount Pleasant Power are listed as local issuing agents. The electrician should pull the permit. You should see the inspection, not a handshake.

What published prices say

Angi's panel cost article lists an upgrade at $1,200 to $2,000. A second Angi article puts a 200 amp upgrade at an average of $1,600, from $800 to more than $4,000. This Old House says most homeowners pay $1,300 to $3,000 for a 200 amp upgrade. HomeGuide lists $1,300 to $1,600 from 100 to 200 amps, or $1,800 to $2,500 if a new service panel is required.

Those guides disagree because they are not describing the same scope. A panel swap in the same location is cheaper than a new meter base, a new mast, and a longer service cable. Get the scope in writing.

  • Meter base and service cable, or panel only.
  • How far the panel moves, if it has to leave a closet or a stairwell that no longer meets code.
  • Drywall and paint after the fact.
  • Aluminum branch wiring or a missing ground found once the cover is off.
  • Permit fees. Angi mentions a wide permit band on related work. Your county fee is whatever the permit office charges that month.

Columbia panels and Spring Hill load

No photo yet. The meter and the panel brand are what an upgrade estimate needs.

Downtown Columbia and the older streets around the square, including houses people point to on West 7th, often still have small panels. Some of those houses also have knob and tube or aluminum branch circuits. A panel upgrade does not automatically replace that wiring. Ask the electrician to say so in the quote. If the walls are plaster, opening them is a different project. See the rewiring page.

Spring Hill is full of houses built in the last thirty years with 200 amp panels that are nonetheless full. A heat pump, an electric range, and a car charger can exceed a panel that looked generous when the house was new. The fix might be a load study and a managed charger, not a 400 amp service. Let the electrician do the math.

Spring Hill straddles Maury County and Williamson County. Columbia Power and Water says it serves Spring Hill. Middle Tennessee Electric serves Williamson and parts of Maury. Do not guess from the subdivision name. Read the bill before you schedule a meter pull.

Mount Pleasant Power System is the municipal utility in Mount Pleasant, and the state lists it as a permit issuing agent. A Columbia permit answer is the wrong desk for that town.

Questions

Can I add a charger without a new panel?

Sometimes, if the load calculation says the service has room, or if a managed charger limits the draw. Sometimes no. The electrician has to run the numbers. Do not land a charger on a spare breaker because the slot is empty.

Is a Federal Pacific panel recalled?

The CPSC closed its investigation in 1983 and said some breakers failed testing. That is not the same sentence as a recall of every panel. Electricians still commonly recommend replacement rather than adding circuits. Ask them to name the brand they see.

Who pulls the permit?

The electrician should. You can confirm electrical permits on the state site, and you can see Columbia Power and Water and Mount Pleasant Power on the issuing agent list. Verify the electrician's license on the state lookup if the job is large enough to require one.

How long is the power off?

Often the better part of a day for a straightforward swap, longer if the utility schedule slips or the service cable has to be replaced. We do not promise a day, because this sample does not dispatch anyone.
