EV Charger Installation in Columbia, TN

A home charger is a dedicated circuit and a decision about where the car actually parks. It is a fast growing request in Spring Hill, and it is still an electrician's job.

Signs you need this

You are ready to price a charger when the car, or the order for one, is real. You are not ready to install it yourself because the panel has a blank slot.

No photo yet. A real garage in the area is the right picture.

You are plugging into a household outlet overnight and it is not enough

A standard outlet is a slow charge and sometimes a warm outlet. Warm means stop. Turn the breaker off and call. Do not swap in a heavier outlet on the same wire.

The garage is far from the panel

A charger on the opposite side of the house means a long cable run, often through an attic or along the outside wall. Distance is the main labor cost after the panel itself.

The panel is already full or already 100 amps

Angi lists extra electrical upgrades at $800 to $2,000 on charger projects, and new wiring at $500 to $1,500. Those are national project figures. They are a warning that the charger price and the panel price are different lines.

You want the unit outside

Outdoor chargers need a location that stays out of the mower and the flood of a downspout, and the wiring method has to match a wet location. Some towns expect a hardwired unit outside. Ask before you buy a plug in model.

What the job involves

The safe homeowner step is to turn off a breaker that is already tripping or hot, and then call. Everything else below is what the electrician does.

  1. Pick the parking spot first

The circuit should end where the charge port is, not where the wall looks empty. Measure the cord path the car will actually use. Say if a second car will want the same charger later.

  2. Calculate the load

EV charging is a continuous load. The circuit is sized above the charger's draw for that reason. The electrician applies that rule. You do not need the formula on a weekend.

  3. Run the circuit and mount the unit

That can be a short run in a garage that shares a wall with the panel, or a long one from a basement panel to a detached garage. Detached garages are a different job if there is no existing power.

  4. Permit and inspection

Use the state electrical permit process. Columbia Power and Water is an issuing agent for much of this area. The electrician pulls it. You keep the inspection result with the house papers.

What published prices say

Angi's 2026 charger guide, based on its own project reports, puts the average installation at $967 and most jobs between $554 and $1,380. Panel work and long wire runs sit on top of that. A Spring Hill house with the panel at the opposite end of the garage can leave the average behind without anything going wrong.

We are not quoting a local special. There is no Maury County column in that guide.

  • Feet of wire from the panel to the parking spot.
  • Whether the panel has capacity.
  • Indoor garage versus an outdoor pedestal.
  • A second circuit later. Conduit with a pull string can be cheaper than opening the wall twice. Ask.

  • Angi, cost to upgrade an electrical panel. Puts a panel upgrade at $1,200 to $2,000. Also lists a breaker replacement at $100 to $250, a subpanel at $400 to $1,750, and a meter box at $200 to $800.

Spring Hill growth, Columbia garages

No photo yet. The useful detail is the distance from the garage to the meter.

Spring Hill has added street after street of houses with garages and 200 amp services. Many of those panels were not planned for a charger plus a heat pump. The town also crosses the Maury and Williamson county line, so the utility on the bill may be Columbia Power and Water or Middle Tennessee Electric. The electrician has to know which one before a service change, and a charger alone may not need the utility at all if the panel has room.

Older Columbia houses are the other case. The car may park in a driveway because the garage is a workshop or a converted room. An outdoor charger, a small pedestal, or a circuit to a carport is the real scope. Knob and tube in the walls is a reason to stop and talk about rewiring before anyone fishes a new cable through that plaster.

Mount Pleasant is quieter and the houses are older on average. A charger there is less common and more likely to meet a small panel. Say the town. Do not let a Spring Hill price follow you home.

Questions

Can I install the charger myself if I only mount the bracket?

No. The wiring is the hazard. Turn off the breaker if something is already hot, and call an electrician.

Do I need 200 amps to own an electric car?

Not always. A load calculation answers it. Some houses charge overnight on the service they have. Some do not. A panel upgrade is its own page and its own price.

Will the power company pay for this?

Do not assume a rebate. Check Columbia Power and Water, Middle Tennessee Electric, or Duck River Electric using the name on your bill. Programs change. We will not print a dollar amount we have not confirmed this month.

What if I rent the house?

You need the owner. A charger is a permanent circuit. We refer an electrician. We do not negotiate with landlords.
